Exelon Nuclear officials say operators at the LaSalle Generating Station in northern Illinois declared a "site area emergency" early this morning during a shutdown of the Unit One reactor.

The company declared the emergency after plant personnel were unable to confirm the position of three of 185 control rods following a shutdown of the reactor for a scheduled refueling outage.

LaSalle Generating Station is located about 55 miles southwest of Chicago.
