A former ball girl for the Chicago White Sox says she and the other women who were employed by the Sox to catch or run down foul balls were all fired because of undue concerns for their safety after instances of fans running onto the field.

Wilkes asked Sox general manager Ken Williams why the position was being eliminated. According to the suit, Williams told her "that recent well-publicized incidents involving unruly fans entering the field was the reason for her termination." Williams, the suit alleges, said there were security concerns "that unruly fans were more likely to enter the field when a female 'ball girl' was present."

However, Wilkes says her job "had nothing to do with security on the field or preventing fans from entering the field."
