Tough neighborhood

The homeowner was returning to his house in the 1600 block of West 38th Place about 5 p.m. when he saw a man trying to break into his garage. Although the burglar was armed with a shotgun, the homeowner confronted him. A struggle ensued, and the shotgun discharged, striking the offender in the head. Jesse Najera, of the 4300 block of South Marshfield Avenue, was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m. Police were not pursuing charges against the homeowner who shot Najera because he was "acting in fear for his life."
