birdwatcherТолько сейчас узнал: в 1901 г. шах Ирана Моззафар-аль-Дин Шах Каджар, по национальности туркмен, предоставил английскому предпринимателю Вильяму Ноксу д'Арки монополию на добычу нефти в Иране в течение 60 лет. Через пятьдесят лет иранцы передумали и монополию отменили, а компанию (одну из первых инкарнаций BP) национализировали. Такая жизнь. Инвестиции в развивающиеся рынки связаны с риском и уместны только в контексте большого диверсифицированного портфолио.
По непонятным причинам в дело вмешалось британское правительство: British ratcheted up the pressure on the Iranian government and explored the possibility of a coup against it. К счастью, U.S.President Harry S. Truman was reluctant to agree -- пример правильного решения, принятого по идиотской причине (he was placing a much higher priority on the Korean War.)
Впрочем, везение продолжалось недолго: аfter the U.S. chose a new president, the British changed their strategy of getting the U.S. on their side from economic/colonial to anti-communist. This new strategy found listening ears in the new U.S. president and the newly established CIA. The CIA finally toppled the democracy in Iran and brought back the Shah.
