SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) -- One way to improve a city's downtown is to have people actually living there instead of just visiting the city during the day and leaving at night.

The analysts say Springfield could support an additional 1,000 residences---mostly in apartments and condominiums, with people coming from Springfield itself, other parts of Hamden County, and even from Worcester and Hartford, Connecticut.

But the study also says Springfield has to solve safety problems in order to attract new residents.

So what happens now?

The city will use the report to try and encourage private developers to look at Springfield properties, with the hopes they'll be turned into remodeled residences for new residents of downtown.
