There's a deeply held faith that making children go to identical schools and learn identical things is central to our nationhood.

The idea stretches back to the 1830s, when Massachusetts reformer Horace Mann saw state-run schools forming children along the lines of his own Unitarian philosophy as a bulwark against many ills, including the Catholicism of Irish immigrants.
