Chicago Tribune -- "It's just sad and terrifying that we're still dealing with this type of violence," U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), a co-sponsor of the legislation, said at a roundtable held in Chicago. The bill was approved by the Senate in September and still needs approval by the House.

The bill would make some crimes -- such as drug trafficking and street gang recruitment -- committed by gang members eligible for federal penalties, including time in the federal prison system.
