CHICAGO -- A new study from the Chicago Crime Commission indicated that gangs in the Chicago metropolitan area were stronger and richer than ever.
"Nowadays, it's not uncommon to see the Vice Lord dealing with the Gangster Disciple, or the Latin King dealing with (another gang), because it's all about the money," said Kevin Ruel of the Cook County Sheriff's Police.
Police also said the demise of Chicago Housing Authority high-rises and better law enforcement in Chicago has caused an influx of Chicago gangs into the suburbs.
"They're national, and if we're to believe the signs in Iraq, they're international," said James Wagner of the Chicago Crime Commission.
"Gangs do bring in a lot of money and they do make a lot of money from the narcotics trade and from other types of illegal activities," said Don Soranno of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. "And when dealing with terror organizations, as you know, that's one of the things they need is funding."
