Background checks required by a new state law have found 1,000 convicted felons—including 60 sex offenders—living at Illinois nursing homes.

``The numbers are further evidence of the need for the state to get its arms around this problem,'' said Cara Smith, policy director for state Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan. The state has about 100,000 residents living at nearly 1,200 licensed facilities.
