Six years on from the biggest pandemic of modern times, we are no closer to knowing how and where the virus first spilled over into humans. Little wonder then that the same tropes that attached to previous historical pandemics have attached to Covid-19, hence the idea that it is all the fault of the Chinese for conducting “reckless” experiments on bat viruses at a government laboratory in Wuhan.

He is the author of five books including The Pandemic Century: One Hundred Years of Panic, Hysteria, and Hubris. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism at City, University of London.

Никто ведь не знал в марте 2020 года, что врать в Конгрессе или фальсифицировать статьи совершенно безопасно. Рискованное поведение требует объяснений, и никакой дополнительный сгенерированный вирусологический спам их предоставить заведомо не может.
Во-вторых, если специальной адаптации для перехода на человека вирусам не требуется, то тем вероятнее, что эпидемию устроили криворукие учёные, просто перенеся вирус из пещеры, где он спокойно жил бы на летучих мышах ещё тысячи лет, в густонаселённую местность. Надо быть ведущим медицинским историком, чтобы этого не сообразить.
В-третьих, ни NIAID, ни EcoHealth Alliance не подконтрольны китайцам, поэтому никто и утверждает бредового "it is all the fault of the Chinese".
Update: оказывается, историк просто бездумно повторил слова другого мерзавца, автора статьи, который отрицает не то что лабораторное происхождение, а весь gain of function research в полном объёме: "This work has direct relevance to the ongoing controversy around COVID-19 origins," says senior author Joel Wertheim, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego. "From an evolutionary perspective, we find no evidence that SARS-CoV-2 was shaped by selection in a laboratory or prolonged evolution in an intermediate host prior to its emergence. "That absence of evidence is exactly what we would expect from a natural zoonotic event – and it represents another nail in the coffin for theories invoking laboratory manipulation."
