BALTIMORE - Nearly 8,000 Baltimore city students -- or one out of every six -- missed more than 20 days of school in 2006-2007, statistics showed. Those students have been labeled habitually truant. Educators said that they're noticing the problem as early as preschool, and according to researchers, something must be done to deal with the problem then.

The latest research, in part, destroys the myth that truancy is just a high school problem, researchers said.

Consultants said that the problems often start with parents who fail to see the importance of those early years of school.
