The Air Force canceled a performance by the Thunderbirds precision flying team after two of the group's F-16 fighter jets touched in flight on Saturday, sending a missile rail from one of the aircraft plunging into Lake Michigan about 2,500 feet from spectators on North Avenue Beach.

Nobody was hurt, and the six Thunderbird aircraft safely returned to the Gary Jet Center. But the team announced it would not perform again until an investigation is completed.

Military leaders see the Air Force team and their Navy counterparts, the Blue Angels, as flying advertisements to lure new pilots.
