Читаю книгу Вильяма Нолена "A Surgeon's World" (начал наугад в гостях, и так понравилось, что купил себе такую же). Все помнят книги Херриота про английского ветеринара; тут то же самое, только про американского врача. Дело происходит в начале семидесятых. Тогда еще нередки house calls (т.е. больной вызывает врача на дом); уже ясно, что семейные доктора скоро вымрут, а им на смену придут разрозненные специалисты, но это еще не произошло; аборты в Миннесоте запрещены. В главе про исключительную важность для хирурга хороших и неформальных взаимоотношений со старшей операционной сестрой д-р Нолен советует:

Remember her birthday, but not her age; ask her opinion about politics, art, cooking or whatever it is she is interested in; possibly, if you are really desperate and she's the sort that appreciates it, give her a little pat on the behind now and again. After all, she may be 90 percent dragon but she's still a person. Treat her like one.

Did you end up borrowing it from us? If not, do you want me to mail it to you, or bring it with to Chicago on November 20th (or whenever it is that Sashura, Sapsilma, and I are introducing out kids?).

It's no problem, our library is completely lend-out library except for about 20 books (some of these have lend-out duplicates). This book is not one of them, they are all on the second shelf from the top in the bookcase by the downstairs submarine bathroom. :-)

Oh, silly, I just saw - you already bought yourself a copy. :-)
