Local Chicago Public Schools students and their parents have been denied a request tendered under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain current data on the number of students arrested in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) - сообщает бесплатная газета The Gazette (та же, из которой я узнал про замечательную речь Клинтон). "They don't want us to know because it's ridiculous how many kids they lock up every year," said Tomica White, a 12-year-old CPS student and Blocks Together Youth Council member.

The group's concerns about school discipline policies are backed up by a 63-page report from the Advancement Project, a Washington, DC advocacy group. The report, Education on Lockdown: The Schoolhouse to Jailhouse Тrack, documents the effects of "zero tolerance" policies all over the nation and reveals 8,539 students between the ages of seven and 18 were arrested from CPS in 2003. Most of the arrests were for minor misconduct and disproportionately affected youth of color.

Этот отчет есть на сети: For example, in 2003 over 8,000 students were arrested in CPS. More than 40% of these arrests were for simple assaults or batteries which involve no serious injuries or weapons and are often nothing more than threats or minor fights. А остальные 59% тогда что?

77% of the arrests were of Black students even though they constituted only 50% of the student enrollment. Интересно, какая связь.

Газета продолжает: "Zero tolerance discipline policies are throwing away the kids that a lot of you all don't seem to want, or give up on, usually youth of color," commented Raymond Collins, 17, CPS student and Blocks Together Youth Council member. "How can we become the adults you want us to be if you give up on us and hand us over to the police?" Хороший вопрос. Не вполне понятно. Спроси у ценителей CPS в той или иной форме.
