WASHINGTON -- The House voted on Thursday to ban the slaughter of horses for meat. Opponents of the practice showed photographs of horses with bloodied and lacerated faces, the result of being crammed into trailers that would carry the animals to slaughterhouses. "It is one of the most inhumane, brutal, shady practices going on in the U.S. today," said Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., a sponsor of the ban.

While working for South Berwyn School District 100, Sperlick would duct-tape students and fondle them. When he was arrested in January, police said the 45-year-old Sperlick fondled the female students between 1998 and 2003. At times, Sperlik would ask the girls, who ranged in age from 9 to 14, to bind themselves and each other to imitate poses from his collection of bondage videos. The assaults took place during school hours, authorities said. Robert Sperlik was sentenced today to 20 years in prison.
