BALTIMORE - Reese [vice president of Recycled Love, an animal rescue organization in Baltimore] said pit bull fights are widespread, and she worries not only about the dogs but the impact the fights have on children who often witness them.

"They are shown that illegal gambling, dogfighting and the cruelty associated with it is fine," she said.

But even though bets are placed, the blood sport is often done purely for entertainment, spectators said. People watching the fights often bring guns, drugs and alcohol to the events. Какой ужас. Какой ужас.

Watching a staged dogfight is illegal in Maryland.

Animal control officials said they have just 15 officers. Experts said that more than twice that number is needed to get a handle on the problem in the city. Тоже интересная работа - вычислять необходимое количество. Кажется, я вижу алгоритм. Надо в два раза больше, чем есть.

"It happens everywhere," Brandon Sears, a southwest Baltimore resident, said.

Бесценное: In January 2001, City Councilwoman Agnes Welch unsuccessfully proposed a bill to ban pit bulls, but animal rights activists said they don't want that to happen. They said they would rather see increased enforcement.

Вот оно, теперь я знаю. Как известно, по-английски голубцы называются фаршированной капустой, а толма - фаршированным виноградным листом. Это для советского уха курьёзно, а всё почему? Потому что:
Dolma, strictly speaking, is a stuffed vegetable, that is, a vegetable that is hollowed out and filled with stuffing. This applies to courgette (кабачок), tomato, pepper, eggplant and the like; stuffed mackerel, squid and mussel are also called "dolma". Dishes involving wrapping leaves such as vine leaves or cabbage leaves around a filling are called 'sarma' though in many languages (ахем, ахем), the distinction is usually not made. Sarma is derived from the Turkish verb sarmak which means to wrap. Other variants derive from the Turkish word for 'leaf', yaprak. [Dolma is a verbal noun of the Turkish verb dolmak 'to be stuffed', and means simply 'stuffed thing'.]
