BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - British troops quit the Iraqi city of Basra on Monday.

The withdrawal from the besieged Basra Palace complex, under daily mortar and rocket fire by Shi'ite militias, is a step towards handing over Basra province to Iraqi control and an eventual British pullout from Iraq.

Members of the Shi'ite Mehdi Army cheered the withdrawal of the 500 soldiers to an air base on the outskirts of the city as a victory for the militia and a defeat for Britain.

Five people were wounded on the Northwest Side this morning in a shooting that Chicago police believe was gang-related.

A 14-year-old boy was among three people killed Sunday in two separate drive-by shootings on Chicago's South Side, police said. All three were known to have gang affiliations, but Kubiak could not say if the shooting was gang-related.

Чудом избежал

Мой год, 1989, был первым, когда колхоз был добровольным (и во многих других важных отношениях первым). Так что знаю только со слов сестры. А был бы я на годик постарше -- и всё.
