Until recently, Toyota had such a hot commodity in the Prius hybrid that most dealers had waiting lists of two to three months for the fuel-efficient car.

Now, Toyota is offering incentives for the first time to move its gas/electric-engine models off the lot.

The change in sales momentum reflects how the popularity of hybrids remains tied very closely to the price of gasoline, rather than a broad change in the public mind-set about what kinds of cars, and engines, people desire.
