издал вторую книгу: Off the Books (The Underground Economy of the Urban Poor), про Бронзвилл. Я налетел, помня первую (про Тейлор Хоумз) - и не осилил. Кошмарически скучно и аморфно написано, названия всех мест и всех улиц изменены, конкретной информации две строчки на десять страниц, всего страниц под пятьсот повторений одного и того же. Читать в конечном итоге можно в любую сторону с любого места. Тем обиднее, что кажется -- только чуть-чуть сильнее сосредоточься, и поймешь, что конкретно делают старосты, и что конкретно делают священники в этих бесконечных церквях (судя по всему, две основные структуры, контролирующие банды). Это чувство обманчиво. Вот открываю совершенно наугад, с. 265:The disagreements between Pastor Barnes and Pastor Wilkins resulted in diminished collaboration among clergy more generally, in mediation and brokerage activities that, up to this point, had brought them together relatively frequently. Barnes became hesitant to help residents retrieve stolen property. He asked his fellow clergy to remove gambling from their churches and to be more discriminating in taking commissions from underground enterpreneurs. But not surprisingly, street gang activity became the focal point of the debate.На первый взгляд, как интересно! А приглядишься -- все слова правильные и на своем месте, а смысл не складывается. Если кто окажется удачливее меня в дешифровке этой книги - дайте знать.

...Venkatesh endlessly returns to labored insights on the clockwork of the "shady economy," and to his obvious sympathy and compassion for his subjects. The latter is emotional and political and is manifest throughout the book - and it is crippling.
A characteristic example exists in the laughable introduction of "Bird," one of the book's plucky heroes, a local mother who Venkatesh describes as "working...sixty to seventy hours a week" as a prostitute...
