A credible commitment to enter a war on American side is a nice, easy and costless way to protect peace (and American interests) in each case. More obviously so in case of China of course.

Commitment может быть credible только при условии содержания миллиардной армии паразитических военнослужащих и производства миллиарда тонн металлоломных ракет и авианосцев в год, а также регулярного реального вступления в войны для поддержания этой инфраструктуры в актуальном состоянии. Nicety этого процесса лежит in the eye of the beholder, а вот насчет его costlessness, это вы загнули.

Где в Тайване американские интересы - отдельный сложнейший вопрос.

Let's put it this way: this army is going to stay around anyway, so why not have it do its' job -- especially since in this case the job does not involve actually doing anything?
Speaking of Taiwan in particular, they are in fact quite able to pay for much of what they need themselves -- if we would only sell them, iirc.
