British space scientists and engineers will today submit detailed plans for a mission to help divert an asteroid which could collide with Earth in 2036. It would collide with a force 100,000 times that unleashed by the nuclear bomb dropped by the United States on Hiroshima in 1945. This would create a massive crater, potentially leave the whole planet in the dark for a year or more because of the dust released into the atmosphere, destroy crops and unleash tsunamis that would destroy coastal settlements.
