Я над этим абзацем тоже задумался, а потом решил, что это у него явный случай приявления смещения выборки: конкретная аудитория была собрана по конкретному (параноидального характера, как можно догадаться) вопросу и вряд ли может репрезентировать military circles.

Из всех профессий и хобби одни лишь военнослужащие оперируют на свои кровные -- такого никакой выборкой не добьешься.

Возмущение понимаю и эмоционально разделяю. Я про другое (литературоведческое, в некотором смысле - как товарищ автор до жизни фразы такой докатился): хотя я и не предполагаю в военных (подавляющем большинстве их) вообще никакой глубины мысли, но не исключаю, что какие-то вещи они могут понимать лучше, чем носители иных профессиональных фильтров. И во тут, думаю, Т. был очарован тем, что в некоторых ситуациях их, военных, не интересует оценка вероятности, а интересует исключительно размер ущерба. И вот этот момент затмил все остальное.

Это вы нарратизируете. Правильнее говорить, что нам с вами повезло, а ему - нет.
