To match the effect of homeschooling you need to compare these students with demographically matched peers, not the public school average. The results of studies that use from a more comprehensive data set (see the data covered here) or pair students with demographically matched peers (see Martin-Chang here) look far different from those released by Ray, whose National Home Education Research Institute is for all intents and purposes an arm of the Home School Legal Defense Association.

The lack of oversight for homeschooling in most states is a very serious problem, and leaves too many children without an education.

Ну как же, популяризатор наук и атеизма. Прославилась несколько лет назад недовольством по поводу преподавания эволюции в халявной израильской программе для приехавших погреться, но ещё до того, на заре жж, претензиями к родителям, поленившимся записать в школу.

served on scholarship committee for many years (had to read huge stacks of applications with all the bios and info on highschools, etc.), can confirm: homeschooled kids are the best students.

however... there's a big difference between "homeschooled because regular schools are not good enough" and "homeschooled because... other reasons". The former are usually the kids of highly educated, highly successful parents. the latter are often the kids of religious nutjobs or victims of neglect.

"not good enough", как оказалось, бывает тоже очень разное. Я когда-то разговаривала с мамой из нашей домашне-виртуальной школы - они живут в сильно плохом районе, там часто стреляют, отпускать ребенка пешком в местную гос. школу она просто боялась, да и в самой школе обстановка не сильно лучше. Некоторое время они с мужем оба работали, тогда платили за католическую школу для ребенка (думаю, платили пару-тройку тысяч в год). Потом мама работу потеряло, денег на школу не осталось, пришлось уходить на домашнее.
