psychologytoday.com -- so, why do we continue to use the misleading and stigmatizing term "schizophrenia"? Habit? Inertia? We once called people with serious mental illness lunatics. We no longer use that inappropriate term. We no longer call the places where they are treated madhouses. We can and should stop calling people schizophrenic. Many clinicians have stopped. We discuss the signs and symptoms we see. We may mention schizophrenia to educate patients on the inadequacy of that term, should they hear it. Several countries in Asia (естественно) have already stopped using "schizophrenia," replacing it with descriptive terms, such as disordered thinking and perception.
