LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Arkansas, the first state to send home obesity report cards, may drop the plan or weaken it.

The cards are intended to warn parents of overweight kids' health risks.

But Gov. Mike Beebe said the school weigh-ins and report cards have "a lot of negative, unintended consequences" and hurt some children's self-esteem. He favors letting parents drop out of the program more easily and wants the state to test children less often.

Since Arkansas adopted its school-based anti-obesity program, California, Florida and Pennsylvania have launched similar efforts.

I think that it is better "to hurt" child's self-esteem now than later when he or she can barely move...

In Canada since last year you can no longer buy junk food on campus or canteen. Well, one of the ways to "fight" with obesity

Не вижу большой дополнительной катастрофы по сравнению со сдаванием нормативов на физкультуре, честно говоря.

ну... от физкультуры во-первых всегда можно было отмазаться. Но речь идет о насмешках сверстников. Если ты толстый, больше вероятности, что над тобой будут смеяться, чем если ты не способен к физическим упражнениям. Хотя бы потому, что второе можно скомпенсировать другими способностями. А вот уж если толстый, так ничем не скомпенсируешь.

самыми разными способами :)

Меня отмазывали в связи с близорукостью (типа, физическое усилие вредно для глаз), кого-то еще - в связи со здоровьем.
Во Франции я не отмазывалась, а просто не сдавала то, что мне не удавалось, компенсировала тем, что у меня хорошо получалось. По-любому, не будучи очень способной к физкультуре, я никогда не слышала ни одной насмешки в мой адрес по поводу этой неспособности. Ни в России, ни во Франции.

Не, ну если совместными усилиями родителей, то можно и ото всей школы отмазаться. Это, опять же, здесь еще легче.

во Франции меня родители уже не отмазывали. В России - только от бега (оставался канат, я на него в принципе не могла влезть, даже зацепиться и повиснуть не могла!, тот же козел, и лыжи). Все остальное было исключительно моей заслугой.

there are different ways to deal with the risk of obesity. Take your example of Canada. I don't think that putting a child in a situation where he or she becomes a derision for his peers is a very good or clever one. After all, many children (and adults as well) choose food as a source of comfort when they suffer from their complexes. So basically, this effort is worthless. And in the end you have both children and later adults who suffer from low self-esteem.
