I don't burn DVD's except occasionally, but two of my students do it on very frequent basis. In their words, the failure rate after a year of storage they achieve approach 10-15%. It is some no-name laptop hardware and presumably they use the cheapest media.

Well, their overall conclusion is more optimistic - there are
CD-R and DVD-R media which are quite stable and can ensure safety of
the data for several tens of years. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for a customer to identify this media :)
