CHICAGO TRIBUNE -- At the Chicago Board of Education meeting Wednesday, Mecks said last year a record 92.8 percent of students, or 385,000 students, showed up for class the first day of school. Officials said first-day attendance is important because it is tied to how much government funding the district receives and it sets a pattern for how students will perform academically during the year, Mecks said.

Throughout August counselors will go to the homes of children who frequently missed school or were truant last year, said Joi Mecks, director of marketing for the district.
