Such disparaging statements against imams, chosen for their community reputation and knowledge of the Quran, go beyond mere gossip in Muslim society, said Azam Nizamuddin, Mohammed's attorney. In court papers, Nizamuddin also said the allegations had hurt Mohammed's construction business.
"It's very, very significant [to call an imam a thief] in a Muslim community," Nizamuddin said.
Hassan agreed to pay the imam nearly $10,000 and write a letter of apology under the terms of a settlement, the imam's attorney said Thursday.
