Dec. 24th, 2007 09:46 amTORONTO - Motorists who take a provincially approved drivers' education course get into more crashes, and hundreds of driving instructors are collecting demerit points for common violations like speeding and disobeying traffic signs, Ontario's auditor general found in his annual report released Tuesday.
Even though there are fewer drivers graduating from training courses, Auditor Jim McCarter said they are 62 per cent more likely to get in a traffic accident - up from 24 per cent in 2000.
Driving instructors were also more likely than the general population to accumulate demerit points. About 360 instructors - 6.5 per cent - collected demerit points for speeding, not wearing a seatbelt and disobeying a traffic light, he said.
