The Bush administration has argued that the shield (американский, в Чехии и Польше) is needed to defend Europe and the U.S. against a potential attack from Iran or North Korea. While neither country has intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching Europe, the shield is warranted because both could one day develop that capability, U.S. officials say.

The point is that there is no fundamental difference between criminals in your state and those in Pakistan. Pakistani criminals are far away, while Illinois criminals are nearby – that’s true. Pakistani criminals are less likely to attack you but there is still a possibility, which was proved on 9/11. Adhering to your flawed logic, types of crimes that take place in your state less often should be exempt from punishment. Let’s just exempt the killings of over 30 people by one murderer from punishment because such mass murders are less likely to take place. Why not?

Let me put this even more straight.
1) There’s a tip-off that terrorists from Springfield are planning to bomb a shopping mall in Chicago. Should they be detained or prevented from doing that in some way?
2) There’s a tip-off that terrorists from Pakistan are planning to bomb a shopping mall in Chicago. Should they be detained or prevented from doing that in some way?
3) Is there any key difference between these two situations?

These terrorists may be ethnic Pashtuns or Arabs who live in Springfield. So their hatred for the US in general and Illinois in particular is understood. The difference between the two situations is that one group of terrorists is located in Pakistan and the other is located in Springfield. And anyway, Chicago is one of the largest US cities, which is why it is a likely target.

By the way, if you think that the number of terrorist incidents is proportional to the extent of militarism, please explain why in Russia there have been much more terrorist incidents since the 1990s. Russia was only waging one “imperialist” war – against Chechnya, while US military operations covered the entire globe.
