Er prägte auch den Namen Quark, den er aus dem Satz „Three quarks for Muster Mark“ aus James Joyce’ Roman Finnegans Wake entnahm. Joyce hatte das Wort wiederum auf der Durchreise durch Deutschland in Freiburg gehört, als Marktfrauen auf einem Bauernmarkt ihre Milchprodukte anboten.[13]
