Chicago Tribune -- Gun-rights advocates scored a stunning success earlier this year when a three judge panel of a federal appeals court in Washington swept aside the District of Columbia's ban on owning handguns, which had been in place since 1976.

On Tuesday, the district government appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. If the court takes the case, as many observers believe it will, it could place Chicago's handgun ban, as well as similar laws nationwide, in jeopardy.

VIENNA (Reuters) -- Officers found the corpse of the 96-year-old aunt under a blanket on a bed after ignoring the 51-year-old niece's claim that her aunt was sleeping and should not be disturbed, a police statement said.

Austrian news agency APA quoted police investigator Gerald Hoebart as saying possible theft was being looked into since the younger woman appeared to have lived off her aunt's pension since the death and used her cashpoint card to withdraw money.

One of the most arresting political cartoons I have seen in recent years was by my old friend Jim Morin, at the Miami Herald. It was of a long line of headstones, disappearing into the horizon to the right. Each headstone said "He died so HE did not die in vain," and each stone had an arrow pointing to the right.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE -- The long-running confrontation between embattled professor Norman Finkelstein and DePaul University ended today without the dramatics he had promised [1].

Instead, he read a statement announcing his resignation this morning on the university's main quadrangle before about 120 supporters announcing that he and DePaul had resolved the controversy. But the terms were kept confidential.

In its statement, the university wrote: "Professor Finkelstein is a prolific scholar and an outstanding teacher."
